About
June Gable, born June 5, 1945, in New York, New York, is an American character actress who trained at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She is recognized for her work across Broadway, television, and film, with particular visibility stemming from her recurring role as talent agent Estelle Leonard on the NBC sitcom Friends.
Gable's Broadway career spans from 1974 to 1983 and encompasses four productions. Her first notable stage credit was the 1974 revival of Candide, in which she portrayed the Old Lady, a performance that earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. The following year she joined The Ritz, stepping into the role previously held by Rita Moreno. She also appeared in They're Playing Our Song, and in 1983 took on the role of Snooks Keene in Moose Murders, a production that opened and closed on the same night. Beyond Broadway, she was part of a replacement cast in the off-Broadway revue Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.
On television, Gable appeared as Detective Battista during the third season of Barney Miller and was part of the cast of the short-lived 1977 revival of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. In 1979 she portrayed Rhoda Rooter in the live-action Hanna-Barbera specials Legends of the Superheroes. From 1978 to 1981 she was a regular cast member on the syndicated variety series Sha Na Na. Throughout the 1980s she guest starred on Miami Vice and Kate and Allie, and appeared in small roles in the 1989 films Brenda Starr and She-Devil. She held a recurring role as Libby Friedman on the HBO comedy series Dream On from 1990 to 1996.
From 1994 to 2004, Gable played Estelle Leonard, the theatrical agent representing Joey Tribbiani on Friends, a character whose death was written into the show's tenth and final season. She also appeared separately in the same series as a delivery room nurse in season one, episode twenty-three. Following the conclusion of Friends, Gable stepped away from acting to care for a partner who was seriously ill. In later years she returned to the stage in productions including The Odd Couple, Picon Pie, and Broads!, and in November 2012 starred as Marie in the world premiere of Bill C. Davis's All Hallowed at the Waco Civic Theatre in Waco, Texas, directed by George Boyd.
In 2018, Gable made her first screen appearance in more than fifteen years in the Netflix comedy film The Week Of. In 2022 she appeared in the comedy-drama film Somewhere in Queens, playing the mother of Ray Romano's character.
