About
June Clyde, born Ina Parton on December 2, 1909, near Maysville, Missouri, was an American actress, singer, and dancer whose career spanned stage and screen on both sides of the Atlantic. She died on October 1, 1987. The third child of William Arthur Parton and Orpha Dorothy Day, she grew up in a family that relocated several times following her parents' divorce around 1913. Her mother subsequently moved the three girls to St. Joseph, Missouri, and by 1915 the family had settled in Arbuckle, California. The girls were nieces of actress Leona Hutton. Around 1916, Orpha married Harvey Arthur Clyde, whose surname June would later adopt professionally.
Clyde's performing career began in childhood, when she appeared on stage at the age of six under the billing Baby Tetrazinia. By nineteen she had transitioned to film, starring in Tanned Legs in 1929. She was named a WAMPAS Baby Star of 1932 and became associated with pre-Code Hollywood productions, including A Strange Adventure (1932) and A Study in Scarlet (1933). On September 12, 1930, she married film director Thornton Freeland in Hollywood. Following the marriage, Clyde relocated to England, where beginning in 1934 she appeared in British films and stage productions, including the London musicals Lucky Break (1934) and The Flying Trapeze (1935), while periodically returning to the United States for stage and film work.
Clyde appeared on Broadway between 1937 and 1941. She portrayed Annabel Lewis in the musical Hooray for What! in 1937 and Sally Trowbridge in the musical Banjo Eyes in 1941. Beyond Broadway, she participated in an Australian production of Annie Get Your Gun that included a month-long engagement in Sydney, and she appeared in an Australian production of Born Yesterday in 1948.
