About
Julie Adrianne Herne (October 31, 1880 – February 25, 1955) was an American actress, playwright, screenwriter, and film scout whose career spanned both the Broadway stage and Hollywood's silent era. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she came from a theatrical family: her father was playwright James A. Herne, her mother was stage actress Katherine Corcoran, and her sister was actress Chrystal Herne.
Herne began writing and performing in her teenage years, and her Broadway career extended from 1903 to 1918. Her stage credits included Richter's Wife, April, The Inner Man, the drama The Family, and The Prince of India. As both a performer and a book writer, she contributed to Broadway productions across multiple decades, with plays reaching the stage through the 1910s and 1920s.
By the early 1920s, Herne had transitioned into work as a scenarist at Paramount Pictures. Her film credits from this period include The Misfit Wife (1920), The Heart Raider (1923), The Snow Bride (1923), Dangerous Money (1924), The Dangerous Flirt (1924), The Side Show of Life (1924), Tiger Love (1924), and Sackcloth and Scarlet (1925). Her work in film tapered off around 1925, after which she returned her focus to writing for the stage.
Herne was found dead in her New York City apartment on February 25, 1955. A suicide note she left behind cited a negative review as the cause of her despair.
