Born December 2, 1925, in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, Julie Ann Harris was the daughter of investment banker William Pickett Harris and nurse Elsie Stivers Smith. After a year at the Yale School of Drama, she made her first Broadway appearance. In 1983, she joined The Mirror Theater Ltd's Mirror Repertory Company as a company member. Her marriages were to Jay Julien, then Manning Gurian, with whom she had one child, and finally Walter Carroll.
Film credits include "East of Eden," "The Haunting," "Gorillas in the Mist," "HouseSitter," "The Dark Half," "Harper," "Reflections in a Golden Eye," "Voyage of the Damned," "The Split," "Crimewave," "The Hiding Place," and "Requiem for a Heavyweight." Among her television credits: "Columbo," "Bonanza," "The Love Boat," "The Big Valley," "Match Game 73," "Family Ties," "The Virginian," "The Outer Limits," "Rawhide," and "Daniel Boone."
Julie Ann Harris earned three Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Single Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for "Victoria Regina" in 1962, Best Single Performance by an Actress for "Little Moon of Alban" in 1959, and Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for "Not for Ourselves Alone: The Story of Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony" in 2000. She was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1979, received the National Medal of Arts in 1994, and was a Kennedy Center honoree in 2005.
Well into her eighties, she remained active, narrating documentaries and appearing on stage in the summer of 2008 at the Monomoy Theater in Chatham, Massachusetts. Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in her honor on August 28, 2013.
