About

Julian L'Estrange, born Julian Boyle on 6 August 1880 in England, was a stage actor who built a career on both sides of the Atlantic before his death on 22 October 1918. He appeared on Broadway between 1902 and 1918 and also worked in silent film, appearing in productions for Paramount Pictures.

L'Estrange made his Broadway debut in Imprudence, which ran from November 1902 through January 1903. He arrived in the United States in September 1908, and his early American stage work included Myself Bettina and The Chaperone. Over the following decade he accumulated a substantial list of Broadway credits, among them Suzanne, White Magic, The Paper Chase, The Spy, Her First Divorce, The Yellow Ticket, The Merchant of Venice, Innocent, and The Tyranny of Tears. His final Broadway appearance came in An Ideal Husband in 1918.

On 25 November 1905, L'Estrange married fellow performer Constance Collier at All Saints Church in London. The two were recognized as a prominent married stage couple on both sides of the Atlantic. Collier later wrote about him in her 1929 autobiography Harlequinade and never remarried following his death.

Alongside his stage work, L'Estrange appeared in a number of silent films, including The Morals of Marcus, Sold, Zaza, Bella Donna, The Girl with the Green Eyes, The Quest of Life, and Daybreak. He died on 22 October 1918 of pneumonia following a bout of Spanish Influenza, during the pandemic of that year.
