About
Julian Robert Stanley Holloway (24 June 1944 – 16 February 2025) was an English actor born in Watlington, Oxfordshire, the son of actor Stanley Holloway and his wife Violet Lane. He received his education at Ludgrove School, Harrow School, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, from which he graduated in 1963. Holloway appeared on Broadway in 1993 in My Fair Ladies.
His screen career began during the 1962–63 television season, when he was cast as Quentin in four episodes of Our Man Higgins. He went on to become a recurring presence in the Carry On film franchise, taking part in eight entries between 1967 and 1976 as well as one of the Carry On Christmas television specials. Among his film appearances were Young Winston (1972), Porridge (1979), The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle (1980), A Christmas Carol (2009), and The Rum Diary (2011). On British television, Holloway appeared in The Sweeney episode Big Spender as John Smith, the organizer of a crime family involved in an elaborate fraud. His additional television credits included Z-Cars, The World of Wodehouse, The New Avengers, The Professionals, Minder, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, Elizabeth R, Uncle Silas, Beverly Hills, 90210, Remember WENN, and the 1989 Doctor Who story Survival.
Holloway built a substantial career as a voice artist, primarily in the United States. In 1991 he voiced Captain Zed in Captain Zed and the Zee Zone, Bradford Milbanks in James Bond Jr., and Odlaw in the Where's Waldo? animated series. He voiced Siegfried Fischbacher in the first season of Father of the Pride in 2004 and provided the voice of Death in the Cartoon Network series Regular Show from 2010 to 2017. He also voiced Prime Minister Almec in multiple episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars across its run from 2008 to 2020. His video game voice work included Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Medal of Honor: European Assault.
In his personal life, Holloway married actress Zena Walker in 1971, though the marriage ended in divorce shortly afterward. A relationship with Tessa Dahl in 1976 produced one daughter, the author and former model Sophie Dahl, born the following year. He married voice-over artist and actress Debbie Wheeler in 1991; that marriage ended in divorce in 1996. Holloway was also a relative of English architect and scenic designer Oliver Percy Bernard. He died from a lung infection in Bournemouth, Dorset, on 16 February 2025, at the age of 80.
