About
Julia James (1890–1964) was an English actress who rose to prominence during the Edwardian era, becoming a leading lady at the Gaiety Theatre in London. Born in London in 1890, she built a career spanning several decades across the British stage and beyond.
James made her professional debut in 1905, appearing in Supper Belle in Blue Bell at the Aldwych Theatre under the direction of Seymour Hicks. Her association with the Gaiety Theatre produced some of her most notable stage work, where she appeared in The Girls of Gottenburg, Havana, and Our Miss Gibbs. It was through Our Miss Gibbs that she also made her Broadway appearance in 1910, bringing the production to American audiences.
Her career extended to international engagements as well. In 1913, she took on the role of Sombra in The Arcadians at L'Olympia in Paris. Three years later, in 1916, she performed at the London Opera House in Christmas in the Trenches. She continued working into the following decade, playing Mabel Mannering in Yes, Uncle! in 1919.
