About
Julia Goss (c. 1946 – 5 August 2023) was a Scottish singer and actress born in Baillieston, Lanarkshire, near Glasgow. Her family relocated to London when she was young, and she took part in school plays and musicals while also singing in church and local choirs. She went on to study music at Trinity College of Music in London, where she performed in concerts and operas as a student.
In the spring of 1967, during her final year at music school, Goss auditioned for the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. The panel stopped her mid-audition and hired her immediately. She joined the company as a chorister and, in the autumn of 1968, began taking on smaller principal roles in the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire, among them Isabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Sacharissa in Princess Ida, Kate in The Yeomen of the Guard, and Giulia in The Gondoliers. She also understudied and occasionally performed the leading role of Elsie Maynard in Yeomen.
When Valerie Masterson departed the company at the start of 1969, Goss assumed her leading soprano roles. These included Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Yum-Yum in The Mikado, Casilda in The Gondoliers, Lady Ella in Patience, Lady Psyche in Princess Ida, Rose Maybud in Ruddigore, and Aline in The Sorcerer, with occasional appearances as Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore. During the company's centenary season in 1975, she played the Plaintiff in Trial by Jury, Princess Nekaya in Utopia Limited, and Julia Jellicoe in a concert performance of The Grand Duke. She remained with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company until 1979.
Alongside her work with D'Oyly Carte, Goss performed in oratorios and concerts. In March 1970, she served as soprano soloist in a performance of Bach's St. John Passion at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Her recordings with the company include the roles of Plaintiff in Trial by Jury (1975), Nekaya in Utopia Limited (1976), Julia in The Grand Duke (1976), Casilda in The Gondoliers (1977), and Laetitia Grinder in The Zoo (1978), as well as excerpts from The Gondoliers and Ruddigore on a 1970 compilation titled Songs and Snatches.
Goss made her Broadway appearance in 1976, with credits that include The Hot Mikado and The Pirates of Penzance. After leaving D'Oyly Carte in 1979, she performed for a season with the Old Vic Theatre Company, taking on operatic roles including Micaëla in Carmen, the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro, Norina in Don Pasquale, and Marguerite in Gounod's Faust. At the Old Vic she also appeared in Miss in Her Teens and The Padlock.
She subsequently built a career in London's West End and on tour in musical theatre. Her stage roles included Josepha in The White Horse Inn, Madame Dubonnet in The Boy Friend, Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, Molina's mother in Kiss of the Spider Woman, Baroness Elsa Schräder in The Sound of Music, Carlotta in The Phantom of the Opera (1991–1992), Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast, Mrs. Nordstrom in A Little Night Music (2001), and Heidi Schiller in Follies (2002). Her performance of "One More Kiss" in Follies was singled out for praise by Variety. She also performed as Little Buttercup in H.M.S. Pinafore with Opera della Luna.
Goss continued to perform in Gilbert and Sullivan productions through groups including The Magic of Gilbert and Sullivan, alongside former D'Oyly Carte colleagues John Ayldon, Lorraine Daniels, Patricia Leonard, Kenneth Sandford, and Geoffrey Shovelton, and The Gilbert and Sullivan Companions, with Shovelton, Jon Ellison, Jane Metcalf, and Michael Rayner. She appeared at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England, and attended multiple reunions of former D'Oyly Carte artists.
Her television work included a 1994 guest appearance on the British series ChuckleVision, in an episode titled "Gala Performance," in which she played a famous opera singer. She also performed on radio, in her own cabaret act — sometimes billed as We Can Make It — and in venues including Monte Carlo and cruise ships. Goss died in England on 5 August 2023.
