About

Julia Adler (July 4, 1897 – June 3, 1995), also known as Julia Adler Foshko, was an American actress born in Philadelphia. She was the last surviving child of actor Jacob Pavlovich Adler and built her career across both Yiddish theater and Broadway, spanning from 1919 to 1952.

Adler began performing as a child in Yiddish theater, where she was known for playing Jessica opposite her father's Shylock and for appearing in the plays of Jacob Gordin. Her Broadway debut came in 1919 at the Garrick Theatre, where she appeared as Starblossom in John Masefield's The Faithful Heart.

Her subsequent Broadway work included the role of Rosa Goldran in Howard E. Rose's Rosa Machree in 1922, followed by Jessica in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice during the 1922–1923 season. In 1939, she played Bessie Berger in Clifford Odets's Awake and Sing!, which marked her final appearance in a Broadway run. In 1952, she returned to the New York stage in a revival of Jacques Deval and Robert E. Sherwood's Tovarich at New York City Center, portraying Madame Chauffourier-Dubieff.

Adler died on June 3, 1995, in Englewood, New Jersey, where she had lived for many years at the Actors Fund Home.
