About

Joyce Ebert (June 26, 1933 – August 28, 1997) was an American actress born in Homestead, Pennsylvania, who built a career spanning Broadway, regional theater, television, and film, and who also pursued a brief career as an opera singer. She trained at the drama school at Carnegie Mellon University and went on to become particularly associated with the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, where she performed in more than 80 productions in both leading and supporting capacities.

Ebert's early career included notable distinctions in classical and operatic work. In 1959 she received the San Diego Shakespeare Festival's Atlas Award. Two years later, she created the role of Betty Parris in the world premiere of Robert Ward's The Crucible at the New York City Opera, and that same year made her off-Broadway debut at the Phoenix Theatre playing Ophelia in Hamlet. Her stage work continued to earn recognition in 1964, when she received both the Clarence Derwent Award and the Obie Award for her portrayal of Andromache in The Trojan Women at Circle in the Square Theatre.

Her Broadway career extended from 1961 to 1987 and encompassed productions including All My Sons, Requiem for a Heavyweight, Watch on the Rhine, The Shadow Box, and The National Health. Her performance as Maggie in Michael Cristofer's The Shadow Box earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play in 1977.

In 1996, the Connecticut Critics Circle honored Ebert with a special achievement award. She died of cancer on August 28, 1997, in Southport, Connecticut, at the age of 64.
