About
Josie de Guzman, also known as Jossie de Guzman, is an American actress and singer of Puerto Rican descent whose career has been centered primarily in theatre. She received her early education at the Academia del Perpetuo Socorro before going on to study at the Boston Conservatory of Music.
De Guzman's Broadway career spans from 1978 to 1992 and encompasses five productions. Her debut came in 1978 when she originated the role of Lidia in The Runaways, the musical written by Elizabeth Swados. The following year she returned to Broadway to play Gia Campbell in Carmelina, the original production with a book by Joseph Stein and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. In 1980, Leonard Bernstein personally selected her to portray Maria in the Broadway revival of West Side Story, a performance that earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She also appeared in Nick & Nora during her Broadway tenure.
Her final Broadway credit came in 1992, when she was cast as Sarah Brown in Jerry Zaks's revival of Frank Loesser's Guys and Dolls, alongside Nathan Lane, Peter Gallagher, and Faith Prince. The production's cast album recording was filmed for broadcast on PBS's Great Performances. That performance brought de Guzman her second Tony Award nomination, this time for Best Actress in a Musical.
