About
Joseph Kilgour (July 11, 1863 – April 21, 1933) was a Canadian actor whose career spanned both the Broadway stage and the silent film era. Born in Ayr, Canada West, he was one of seven children of Joseph Kilgour Sr. and Mary Anderson, who had married on September 29, 1856. His father operated a general store in Ayr. Kilgour eventually left his hometown and relocated to the United States to pursue a career in acting.
His Broadway career extended from 1896 to 1930 and encompassed a wide range of productions. Among his stage credits were The Easiest Way, Spring Fever, Spring 3100, Potash and Perlmutter, and If I Was Rich. His sustained presence on Broadway over more than three decades established him as a veteran figure in American theatrical circles.
Kilgour also built a substantial career in silent film, appearing in more than 50 productions between 1909 and 1926. His transition from the stage to the screen allowed him to reach audiences beyond the theater, and he became recognized in both mediums. He eventually retired from acting and spent his final years on Long Island, New York, where he died on April 21, 1933.
