About

Joseph De Stefani (October 3, 1879 – October 26, 1940) was an American character actor born in Venice, Italy, whose career spanned both stage and screen during the early decades of the twentieth century.

De Stefani appeared on Broadway in 1922 in the play It Is the Law. His work in the theater preceded a transition to film, where he established himself as a recognizable presence in the early sound era. His screen career began with the 1931 production Beau Ideal, after which he went on to appear in 25 films over the following decade.

His final film role came in 1940 with A Dispatch from Reuters, a production starring Edward G. Robinson in which De Stefani had a small part. The film was released one week before his death on October 26, 1940. De Stefani was married to Helen Keers, a light-opera prima donna, who preceded him in death in 1938. He is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
