About
Joseph Bottoms is an American actor born in Santa Barbara, California, and the brother of actors Timothy Bottoms, Sam Bottoms, and Ben Bottoms. He won the 1975 Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year and went on to build a career spanning film, television, and Broadway.
Bottoms launched his screen career with a television movie debut in Trouble Comes to Town. His follow-up role as Robin Lee Graham in The Dove, based on the true story of a teenage sailor's solo voyage around the world, earned him the Golden Globe. In 1978, he appeared in the television miniseries Holocaust, portraying Rudi Weiss, a German Jew who joins the Jewish partisans. The following year he took a role in Disney's science fiction film The Black Hole, which earned more than $35 million at the U.S. box office.
Bottoms made his Broadway debut in Fifth of July, which opened at the New Apollo Theatre on November 5, 1980. The production was directed by Mason and featured a cast that included Christopher Reeve as Ken, Swoosie Kurtz as Gwen, and Jeff Daniels reprising the role of Jed.
His subsequent screen work included a 1984 appearance opposite Kirstie Alley in Blind Date, followed by a series regular role on the television drama Santa Barbara from 1985 to 1986. In 1990 he joined the Canadian series Street Legal in a guest arc, and in 1991 he played the second Cal Winters on the daytime drama Days of Our Lives. He returned to series television as a regular cast member of The Net in 1998, with his final screen credit coming in 1999 on the television series V.I.P.
Bottoms has been married and divorced twice. Since 1999 he has operated the Bottoms Art Galleries in Santa Barbara, which feature sculptures by his father.
