About

Joseph Garibaldi Aulisi, also credited as Joseph G. Aulisi and Joe Aulisi, is a costume designer with credits in theater, film, and television. He appeared on Broadway as a performer in 1965 in the play Devils before establishing himself as a designer in the years that followed.

Aulisi began designing costumes for New York City productions in 1966, when he worked on The Ox Cart. He followed that with The Wicked Cooks in 1967. His Broadway design debut came in 1968 with the original production of The Man in the Glass Booth, and he went on to design costumes for more than 20 original Broadway productions. Among those were God's Favorite in 1974 and Rockabye Hamlet in 1976. His final Broadway credit as a designer was Artist Descending a Staircase in 1989.

Aulisi received two Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Costume Design. The first came in 1986 for his work on Precious Sons, an award ultimately given to Lindsay Davis for The Mystery of Edwin Drood. His second nomination followed in 1989 for Rumors, with that award going to William Ivey Long for Lend Me a Tenor.

His work in film and television began in 1971 with Shaft, a production later recognized as one of the early films of the blaxploitation genre. Over the course of his screen career, Aulisi contributed to more than 60 film and television productions, including Die Hard with a Vengeance in 1995, Bicentennial Man in 1999, and Charlie's Angels in 2000. His film and television work earned him two Emmy Award nominations and three Costume Designers Guild Award nominations.
