Jonathan Newth is a British actor born on 6 March 1939, whose career has spanned more than five decades in theatre, television, and film. He received his training at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Newth's stage work has taken him to some of the most prominent theatrical institutions in the English-speaking world, including the Royal Shakespeare Company and the West End. In 1963, he appeared on Broadway in The School for Scandal, marking his contribution to American theatre during that period.
On British television, Newth accumulated an extensive list of credits across a wide range of drama series and serials. His appearances include Emergency Ward 10, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Ace of Wands, The Troubleshooters, Z-Cars, Callan, Van der Valk, The Brothers, Softly Softly, and Poldark. He also appeared in the Doctor Who serial Underworld, Notorious Woman, and Secret Army, in which he played the role of Barsacq. Further television work includes The Professionals, The Nightmare Man, The Day of the Triffids, and Tenko, where he portrayed Colonel Clifford Jefferson. Additional credits span Triangle, Angels, Juliet Bravo, After Henry, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in the episode "The Bruce-Partington Plans," Boon, Bugs, The Bill, Agatha Christie's Poirot in the Dumb Witness episode, Peak Practice, and Heartbeat. In 2019, he appeared in a single episode of Doctors as John Webster.
Newth's film work includes an uncredited role as a Guard in Carry On Spying in 1964, followed by a part as a Gentleman at Cockfight in Far from the Madding Crowd in 1967. He played Tim in Yellow Dog in 1973 and appeared in both Danger on Dartmoor and North Sea Hijack, the latter as Kirk, in 1980. Subsequent film roles include Mr. Griffith Jones in Champions and Tony Walters in Missing From Home, both from 1984, as well as The Case of Marcel Duchamp that same year. Later film appearances include the role of Judge in Incognito in 1997 and Magistrate de Marce in The Affair of the Necklace in 2001.
Newth married actress Gay Wilde in 1979. As of 2007, the couple had been living in Bradford-on-Avon with their four children.
