About

Jonathan Hadary is an American actor born on October 11, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, who was raised in Bethesda, Maryland. His Broadway career spans from 1977 to 2024. He attended Tufts University, where he was cast in numerous productions under both student and faculty direction. During his sophomore year, he became an understudy for the Boston company of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. When the actor playing Charlie Brown was drafted for the Vietnam War, the Schroeder performer moved into the lead role, and Hadary assumed the part of Schroeder, completing the Boston run and subsequently touring with the production.

Hadary made his New York City stage debut in 1976 in the Playwrights Horizons staging of Albert Innaurato's Gemini. The off-Broadway production drew critical attention and transferred successively to PAF Playhouse, Circle Repertory Company, and finally to Broadway, where it ran for 1,819 performances. He was a member of the acting company at Circle Repertory Company and returned to off-Broadway work in the years that followed, appearing in the 1979 Howard Ashman and Alan Menken musical adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, Ted Tally's 1980 play Coming Attractions, and the 1981 Tom Lehrer revue Tomfoolery. In 1982 he returned to Broadway to replace Harvey Fierstein in Torch Song Trilogy.

Hadary won an Obie Award for his performance in William M. Hoffman's 1985 play As Is at Circle Rep. That production also transferred to Broadway, where it received three Tony Award nominations and won the Drama Desk Award for Best Play. He also originated the role of James Garfield assassin Charles Guiteau in the off-Broadway premiere of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman's Assassins. In 1989, Hadary co-starred opposite Tyne Daly in the Broadway production of Gypsy, earning both Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations for his performance.

His Broadway work continued with the 1993 revival of Guys and Dolls, in which he played Nathan Detroit. In 1994–95, Hadary portrayed Roy Cohn in the national touring production of Millennium Approaches, the first part of Tony Kushner's Angels in America, a credit also reflected in his verified Broadway appearances in that production. He appeared in the 2006 revival of Awake and Sing!, for which he shared the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble Performance. Additional Broadway credits include Golden Boy, All Shook Up, and a portrayal of King Arthur in Monty Python's Spamalot.

In 2019, Hadary appeared in two productions at The Public Theater: as tribune Sicinius in Coriolanus and in an updated version of Tony Kushner's A Bright Room Called Day. His film credits include A Time to Kill, Private Parts, and Intolerable Cruelty. On television he has appeared in Miami Vice, Party of Five, Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Sex and the City, Hope and Faith, Louie, Veep, The Heart, She Holler, and Russian Doll.
