About

Jonah Sezzin Platt, born November 17, 1986, in Los Angeles, California, is an American actor, singer, and Jewish advocate whose work spans stage, film, television, and podcasting. He is one of five children born to Julie and Marc Platt, the latter a film, television, and theater producer whose credits include Legally Blonde, Into the Woods, La La Land, Mary Poppins Returns, the stage musical Wicked, and its film adaptation. Platt's mother has served as chair of the Board of Trustees of the Jewish Federations of North America, an organization overseeing 146 Jewish federations across the United States and Canada. His siblings include actor Ben Platt, with whom he has performed musically, along with two other brothers and two sisters. The family is Jewish.

Platt's education was rooted in Jewish life and academic study. He attended Jewish day school and Camp Ramah, a sleepaway camp affiliated with Conservative Judaism, and participated in Birthright Israel, a free ten-day trip to Israel for Jewish adults between the ages of 18 and 26. He completed his secondary education at Harvard-Westlake School, an independent school in Los Angeles, before earning a Bachelor of Arts in English with minors in Cinema Studies and Music from the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences in 2008.

His stage career developed primarily in Los Angeles before his Broadway debut. In 2013, he starred in a Los Angeles revival of the musical comedy Bare: A Pop Opera. The following year, he played Wolf alongside Kristen Bell and Sarah Hyland in a Hollywood Bowl production of Hair, and starred as Homer in La Mirada Theatre's revival of Floyd Collins, a production that won Best Production of a Musical at the 2014 Ovation Awards. In 2015, Platt made his Broadway debut in Wicked, playing the role of Fiyero. In 2017, he played the Beast in Beauty and the Beast — A Christmas Rose, a Pasadena production staged in the style of a British pantomime, and directed a production of Bert V. Royal's Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, which ran for six sold-out performances at the Blank Theater as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival, partly funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, with 15 percent of proceeds directed to the GSA Network.

Platt continued to accumulate stage credits in subsequent years. In 2018, he starred as Marty Kantrowitz in the musical stage adaptation of the 1999 film A Walk on the Moon at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. In 2019, he directed Carrie Manolakos in a reading of the play Irena at Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills, a work based on the life of Irena Sendler, a Polish social worker who rescued more than 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during the Second World War. In 2020, he starred as Davy Rothbart in the musical Found, directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel at the Los Angeles Theatre Center, a production drawn from discarded notes and letters collected by Rothbart. In 2023, he appeared in a workshop of The Heart of Rock and Roll, directed by Gordon Greenberg, and later that year starred alongside Bella Heathcote in Samuel Baum's play The Engagement Party at the Geffen Playhouse.

On screen, Platt had a minor role in Aaron Sorkin's 2021 drama Being the Ricardos, which starred Nicole Kidman. In 2022, he starred in the Hulu Hanukkah film Menorah in the Middle alongside Lucy DeVito. He is currently producing and set to star in his first feature film, The Mensch, alongside Ginnifer Goodwin.

Platt has also performed musically with his brothers Ben and Henry as the Platt Brothers, as well as in solo and duet performances with Ben.

His advocacy work has become a significant part of his public profile. In October 2023, he contributed a column to Variety, as part of the publication's Antisemitism and Hollywood package, calling for more joyful Jewish narratives in film and television. In January 2024, he joined Julianna Margulies, David Schwimmer, and Debra Messing in signing an open letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences demanding the inclusion of Jews in its representation and inclusion standards. In October 2024, he launched the weekly podcast Being Jewish with Jonah Platt, interviewing Jewish entertainers, writers, advocates, rabbis, and non-Jewish allies. Guests have included Skylar Astin, Montana Tucker, Rabbi David Wolpe, Sarah Hurwitz, Tiffany Haddish, Ginnifer Goodwin, Josh Gad, Van Jones, Aleeza Ben Shalom, Rabbi Angela Buchdahl, Dara Horn, Bruce Pearl, Patricia Heaton, David Baddiel, Noa Tishby, and Jason Alexander. Haaretz described the podcast as a top-ranked Jewish podcast. In 2025, the podcast received the Webby Awards honoree designation for Best Indie Podcast and the Religion Communicators Council Wilbur Award for Excellence in the category of Audio Productions — Extended Length. California's 51st State Assembly district recognized Platt with a Community Excellence Award for Combating Antisemitism in late 2024. In September 2025, he joined Debra Messing, Liev Schreiber, Mayim Bialik, and Gene Simmons in signing a letter rejecting a boycott of the Israeli film industry. In November 2025, American Friends of ELEM honored him with the Lifesaver Award at the Ray of Hope Benefit in Manhattan.

In his personal life, Platt married Courtney Galiano in 2016 in a Jewish ceremony officiated by Rabbi David Wolpe. His wife converted to Judaism, and Platt serves as an Advisory Board Member for the American Jewish University's Miller Intro to Judaism Program. The couple have two children. In 2025, Platt publicly disclosed that he had received an adult diagnosis for ADHD.
