About
Jon Tenney, born Jonathan Frederick Tenney on December 16, 1961, in Princeton, New Jersey, is an American actor whose career has spanned stage, television, and film. His father, Frederick Haworth Tenney, worked as a research physicist, and his mother, Dr. Lillian Sandra Baum, was a psychiatrist. His maternal grandparents were Polish Jewish immigrants, and his paternal ancestry is English. Tenney earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Vassar College in 1984, with a double major in drama and philosophy, before going on to train at The Juilliard School's Drama Division as part of Group 19, which ran from 1986 to 1990.
Tenney launched his acting career with a touring production of Mike Nichols' The Real Thing. His Broadway work took place between 1985 and 1995 and included productions of Biloxi Blues and The Heiress. His New York stage credits also encompass The Substance of Fire, and he worked regularly in regional theater throughout this period.
His television career included recurring and guest roles across multiple networks before he landed the role of Special Agent Fritz Howard on TNT's The Closer, which he played from 2005 to 2012. The character served as the husband of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, portrayed by Kyra Sedgwick. When the series concluded, Tenney reprised the role in its spin-off, Major Crimes, from 2012 to 2018, with Howard eventually rising to the rank of LAPD deputy chief in the third season. Prior to The Closer, he played Hank Riley in the fourth season of Lifetime's The Division in 2004. He also portrayed Dr. Simon Craig, a love interest of Nora Walker, played by Sally Field, in Brothers & Sisters, and in 2013 starred alongside Rebecca Romijn in TNT's King & Maxwell as Sean King, a former Secret Service agent turned private investigator. In 2014, he joined the cast of Shonda Rhimes' Scandal in a recurring capacity. Earlier television work included Steven Bochco's Brooklyn South, the sitcom Kristin, and guest appearances on programs such as Will & Grace, Murphy Brown, Cybill, Spenser: for Hire, and Get Real.
Tenney's film work includes a role as the villainous CEO of Benbrook Oil Company in Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home, and a part as the friend of Alex Whitman, played by Matthew Perry, in Fools Rush In. He appeared in supporting roles in Tombstone, Beverly Hills Cop III, Nixon, and Music from Another Room, as well as in the 2009 horror remake of The Stepfather and John Cameron Mitchell's Rabbit Hole. In 2011, he portrayed Martin Jordan in the superhero film Green Lantern.
