About
Jon Jon Briones, born Ernesto Cloma Briones Jr. on August 7, 1965, in Quezon City, Philippines, is a Filipino-American actor whose career has centered on musical theatre and screen work across multiple decades. He became a United States citizen in 2010 and is married to Megan Johnson, whom he wed in 1996. The couple has two children, Isa Briones, born in 1999, and Teo Briones, born in 2005, both of whom, along with their mother, work as actors.
Briones first encountered Miss Saigon while studying engineering in the Philippines, when a producer friend asked him to help organize auditions being held by the Cameron Mackintosh team. He assisted with the logistics of those auditions and also auditioned himself, ultimately joining the ensemble of the original 1989 London production. Over the following years he remained connected to the show through various touring productions, working as a swing and covering multiple roles before eventually taking on the role of the Engineer.
In 2014, Briones joined the original cast of the West End revival of Miss Saigon at the Engineer, a performance that earned him a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical and a win at the Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He remained with that production until it closed on February 27, 2016. The following year, he transferred with the show to Broadway at the Broadway Theatre, where previews began on March 1, 2017, and the production officially opened on March 23. His Broadway debut in the role earned him a Theatre World Award in 2017.
Beyond Miss Saigon, Briones appeared in two television anthology series in 2018, playing Modesto Cunanan, father of Andrew Cunanan, in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, and portraying Ariel Augustus in American Horror Story: Apocalypse. In 2020, he took on the role of Dr. Richard Hanover in the Netflix drama series Ratched. In 2022, he appeared in the second season of Star Trek: Picard, the same series on which his daughter Isa Briones serves as a main cast member. The following year, he played Joseph in the 2023 film The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a drama and horror film centered on the crew of a merchant ship transporting unmarked wooden crates to London who discover the presence of Dracula aboard their vessel.
In March 2024, Briones joined the Broadway cast of Hadestown, portraying Hermes, appearing opposite his daughter Isa Briones, who made her Broadway debut in the production as Eurydice. On April 30, 2019, he received the Visionary Award from East West Players at their annual awards dinner, an honor given to individuals who raise the visibility of Asian Pacific Americans through their work.
