About
Jon Bernthal is an American actor born Jonathan Edward Bernthal on September 20, 1976, in Washington, D.C. He was raised in Cabin John, Maryland, and attended the Sidwell Friends School, graduating in 1995. After briefly enrolling at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, he left on the advice of his acting teacher, Alma Becker, to study at the Moscow Art Theatre School in Russia, where he also played catcher for a Russian professional baseball team. He was subsequently discovered by the executive director of Harvard University's Institute for Advanced Theater Training at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, completing his graduate-level certificate studies there in 2002.
Bernthal was born into a Jewish family. His father, Eric Lawrence "Rick" Bernthal, was a lawyer with Latham & Watkins LLP and served as chair of the board of directors for The Humane Society of the United States until 2019. His mother is Joan Lurie, née Marx. His paternal grandfather was musician and producer Murray Bernthal. He has two brothers: Nicholas, an orthopedic surgeon and professor at UCLA, and Thomas, a consulting agency CEO who is married to former Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. The three brothers are cousins of rock musician Adam Schlesinger, who died in 2020.
Following his studies in Cambridge, Bernthal relocated to New York City to pursue a theater career. Since 2002, he has performed in more than thirty plays regionally and off-Broadway, including productions with his own theater company, the now-defunct Fovea Floods. He relocated to Los Angeles in 2006 and booked his first regular television role on the CBS sitcom The Class, which was canceled after one season. Early television appearances included guest roles on Boston Legal, CSI: Miami, and How I Met Your Mother. In 2009, he was a series regular on the ABC drama Eastwick and portrayed Sgt. Manuel Rodriguez in the HBO miniseries The Pacific in 2010.
Bernthal rose to prominence playing Shane Walsh in Frank Darabont's AMC horror drama The Walking Dead, a role he held as a starring cast member from 2010 to 2012, with a return appearance in 2018. The performance earned him a nomination for the Breakout Performance – Male Award at the 2011 Scream Awards. He later reunited with Darabont on the TNT series Mob City, playing LAPD Detective Joe Teague. In 2011, he performed in the world premiere of the dark comedy play Small Engine Repair, receiving critical praise and an Ovation Award nomination for his performance.
His film career expanded steadily through the 2010s. He appeared in supporting roles in Snitch and The Wolf of Wall Street, both in 2013, followed by the World War II film Fury in 2014, in which he played Grady "Coon-Ass" Travis. He appeared in Denis Villeneuve's Sicario in 2015 and co-starred with Ben Affleck in The Accountant in 2016. Additional film credits include Baby Driver and Wind River, both in 2017, Widows in 2018, Ford v Ferrari in 2019, and King Richard and The Many Saints of Newark in 2021. More recent film work includes Origin in 2023, and both The Accountant 2 and The Amateur in 2025.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bernthal portrayed Frank Castle, known as The Punisher, first appearing in the second season of Netflix's Daredevil in 2016. The character was subsequently given a standalone series, The Punisher, which ran for two seasons from 2017 to 2019. He reprised the role in the first season of the revival series Daredevil: Born Again in 2025. Separately, his recurring guest role as restaurant owner Michael Berzatto in the Hulu series The Bear, which began in 2022, earned him a Primetime Emmy Award and two additional nominations in that category.
Bernthal made his Broadway debut in 2026 in Dog Day Afternoon, marking his first appearance on the Broadway stage. The production added a significant theatrical milestone to a career that had been rooted in stage work since his early years performing regionally and off-Broadway following his training at the Moscow Art Theatre School and the American Repertory Theater.
