About

John Wengraf (April 23, 1897 – May 4, 1974) was an Austrian-born actor whose career spanned European theater, early British television, Broadway, Hollywood film, and American television across more than three decades.

Born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, Wengraf established himself as a matinee idol during the 1930s and served as director of the Vienna State Theatre. As the Nazis consolidated power in Austria, he emigrated to Britain in 1939, where he worked on more than 100 productions as either an actor or director and appeared in some of the earliest live BBC television broadcasts, as well as in several films in unbilled roles.

His Broadway career began in 1941 when he appeared alongside Helen Hayes in the drama Candle in the Wind, a production that prompted him to remain in the United States. He returned to Broadway with The French Touch in 1945 and The Traitor in 1949. Following his initial Broadway work, he settled in the Los Angeles area, where he pursued a career in film.

In Hollywood, Wengraf frequently portrayed villainous characters, appearing in the Humphrey Bogart film Sahara (1943), The Boy from Stalingrad (1943), U-Boat Prisoner (1944), and Till We Meet Again (1944). In later years his screen roles shifted toward ethnic professionals, including scientists, doctors, professors, and foreign royalty. He portrayed Count Von Papen in 5 Fingers (1952) and appeared as Ronchin in the Ethel Merman musical Call Me Madam (1953), with additional film credits including Tomorrow Is Forever (1946), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), Hitler (1962), The Prize (1963), and Ship of Fools (1965).

During the 1950s and 1960s, Wengraf worked extensively in American television, appearing on The Untouchables (1959), Hawaiian Eye (1959), The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964), and The Time Tunnel (1966). He retired in 1966 and died in Santa Barbara, California, on May 4, 1974, at the age of 77.
