About

John Tucker Battle (October 1, 1902 – October 31, 1962) was an American performer, book writer, and screenwriter whose career spanned stage, radio, film, and television. Born at the turn of the century, he built a multifaceted body of work across several decades of American entertainment.

Battle's connection to Broadway dates to the mid-1920s, when he appeared in a series of stage productions between 1925 and 1928. His credits from that period include the plays The Bottom of the Cup, First Flight, and Hot Pan, the last of which he contributed to as a book writer. These early years on Broadway established his foundation in dramatic storytelling before his career shifted toward other mediums.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Battle worked in radio both as a writer and as a performer, broadening his range beyond the stage. His transition into film brought him credits on a number of Hollywood productions, among them Irish Eyes Are Smiling (1944), Captain Eddie (1945), Man Alive (1945), So Dear to My Heart (1948), The Frogmen (1951), A Man Alone (1955), Lisbon (1956), and Shoot-Out at Medicine Bend (1957). He also contributed uncredited work to Captain from Castile (1947) and Invaders from Mars (1953).

In the later phase of his career, Battle wrote for several prominent television westerns, including Bonanza, Have Gun Will Travel, Maverick, Colt .45, The Restless Gun, Bat Masterson, and Black Saddle. He died on October 31, 1962, and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
