About

John Treacy Egan is an American actor and singer born on July 10, 1962, in New York City. He attended Rye Country Day School before going on to earn a degree from SUNY Purchase. His Broadway career spans from 1987 to 2025 and includes productions such as Just In Time, My Fair Ladies, Casa Valentina, Sister Act, Bye Bye Birdie, and The Little Mermaid, among others.

Egan's professional stage career began off-Broadway with When Pigs Fly at the Douglas Fairbanks Theater in 1996, a production to which he also contributed as a cast album recording artist. His Broadway debut followed in 1997 with Jekyll & Hyde, where he performed the roles of Groom and Mike while also understudying the roles of Utterson, Glossop, and the Bishop. He appeared in the Broadway Television Networks/Atlantic Recordings film version of that production as well. In 2001, he took part in the off-Broadway run of Bat Boy: The Musical and appeared as Hortensio in a Los Angeles production of Kiss Me, Kate at the Shubert Theatre.

Egan's most extensive Broadway association is with The Producers, in which he became the only actor to have played three principal roles. He originated the role of Franz Liebkind from May 2002 to April 2003, then transitioned to Roger De Bris from April to October of that same year. After a brief return in December 2004 to play Max Bialystock for one week, he officially assumed the role of Max on November 1, 2005, holding it through the production's closing in 2007, with the exception of a several-month period in 2006 during which Tony Danza stepped in. Egan also appeared in the 2005 film adaptation of The Producers, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, in the role of First Nighter.

In September 2003, Egan participated in the Actors Fund Benefit Concert of Chess alongside Josh Groban at the New Amsterdam Theatre. He originated the role of Chef Louis when The Little Mermaid opened on Broadway in 2007, contributing as well to the production's cast album. From October 2009 to January 2010, he appeared in the Roundabout Theatre Company's Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie, playing a parent and reporter. He subsequently joined the Tony Award-nominated musical Sister Act on Broadway, playing Joey from April 2011 to August 2012. During the early 2010s, Egan performed in concert versions of Oliver! at the Shubert Theatre, where he played Mr. Bumble, and Guys and Dolls at Carnegie Hall, where he took on the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson.

Beyond Broadway, Egan played Vlad in the regional premiere of Anastasia in 2023 and began performances as Colonel Mustard in the national tour of Clue: On Stage in February 2024. He has also worked in television and film, appearing in the movie Last Night alongside Eva Mendes and Keira Knightley, and on television programs including 30 Rock, Law & Order, As the World Turns, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Egan released his first solo recording, Count The Stars, in April 2008, followed by a second album, On Christmas Morning, in October 2009. His discography also includes cast recordings for When Pigs Fly, Jekyll & Hyde, Bat Boy, The Little Mermaid, and the 2005 film soundtrack for The Producers.
