John Tansey was an American actor born on October 8, 1901, in New York City, who built a career spanning both stage and screen. He died on April 28, 1971, in Hollywood, California. His mother was actress Emma Tansey, and his brothers were Robert Emmett "Bob" Tansey and James Sheridan Tansey. He also had a cousin of the same name, born in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.
Tansey's Broadway career ran from 1908 to 1911 and included appearances in a range of productions. His stage credits encompassed the musical The Pied Piper, Shakespeare's The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Winter's Tale, as well as Sister Beatrice and Liz the Mother, among other productions.
Alongside his stage work, Tansey appeared in 21 films between 1908 and 1932. His screen debut came with The Red Man and the Child in 1908, and subsequent film appearances included And a Little Child Shall Lead Them and A Trap for Santa, both in 1909, Barnaby Lee in 1917, The Heart of a Girl and Little Miss Hoover in 1918, Trouping with Ellen in 1924, The Sky Rider in 1928, Romance of the West in 1930, and Riders of the Rio in 1931. In addition to performing, Tansey worked behind the camera, writing and directing Wild and Wooly in 1924 and Romance of the West in 1930.
