About
John Savage, born John Smeallie Youngs on August 25, 1949, in Old Bethpage, Long Island, New York, is an American actor who has worked across Broadway, film, and television for more than five decades. He is the son of Muriel Vanderveer and Floyd-Jones Youngs Jr. His siblings include actors Gail Youngs, born in 1952, and Jim Youngs, born in 1956, as well as sister Robin Young, a Peabody Award-winning journalist and broadcaster. Savage trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts before joining Manhattan's Children's Theatre Group in his early career.
Savage's Broadway career spanned from 1971 to 1977 and included appearances in Ari, American Buffalo, and The Exonerated. His role in David Mamet's American Buffalo came during the late 1970s and coincided with his emergence as a prominent film actor. On screen, he gained widespread recognition for a series of roles in 1978 and 1979, beginning with Steven Pushkov in the multiple Oscar-winning film The Deer Hunter, followed by Claude Hooper Bukowski in Hair and a lead role in The Onion Field. These performances established him as a notable presence in Hollywood, particularly in portrayals of sensitive and troubled characters.
Over the following decades, Savage accumulated credits in more than 200 film and television productions. In 1991, he starred in Door to Silence, the final film of Italian director Lucio Fulci. He appeared in the 1998 war film The Thin Red Line, for which he shared a Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Motion Picture Ensemble from the 1999 ceremony. In 1999, he portrayed Captain Ransom in the two-part Star Trek: Voyager episode "Equinox." From 2000 to 2002, he played Donald Lydecker across both seasons of the television series Dark Angel, and from 2003 to 2005 he appeared as Henry Scudder in the HBO series Carnivàle. He also appeared in separate, unrelated roles in two Law & Order franchise installments: a 2004 episode of Criminal Intent and a 2005 episode of Special Victims Unit.
Later credits include the 2015 horror film Tales of Halloween, the 2017 film In Dubious Battle, and the 2017 continuation of Twin Peaks. That same year, Savage spoke at a tribute to director Richard Donner held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2018, he appeared in the television series Goliath and contributed a spoken-word monologue to the title track of This Town, an album by Steve Smith of Dirty Vegas.
Among his individual awards, Savage received the AOF/WAB Award for Best Supporting Actor for Money Fight in 2008, the Claw Award for Best Supporting Actor for From a Place of Darkness in 2009, the Houston Film Society Critics' Choice Award for Best Actor for The Black Dove in 2012, the Sofia Award for outstanding achievements in world cinema in 2017, and the July Award for Best Actor for Betrayed in 2018. He also shared ensemble cast awards for Last Call at Murray's in 2016 and 2017, and a Bronze Wrangler in 2001 for The Virginian.
In his personal life, Savage has two children with his first wife, Susan, including actress Jennifer Youngs, born in 1969. He was married to South African actress Sandi Schultz from 1993 to 2002. During the 1980s and 1990s, Savage was an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa and became acquainted with Nelson Mandela. He served as assistant production manager for the South Africa unit of Spike Lee's 1992 film Malcolm X and helped secure Mandela's participation in the project. His former brother-in-law is actor Robert Duvall, who was married to his sister Gail Youngs from 1982 to 1986.
