About
John Emmet Raitt, born January 29, 1917, in Santa Ana, California, was the son of Archie J. Raitt and the former Stella Walton. He attended the University of Redlands and made his professional debut in 1940, singing in the chorus of "HMS Pinafore" with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. His first marriage, to Marjorie Haydock, produced three children: Bonnie, Steven, and David. He later married Rosemary Kraemer.
His film credits include "The Pajama Game," "Flight Command," "Billy the Kid," "Little Nellie Kelly," "Ship Ahoy," "Sunday Punch," and "Broadway: The Golden Age, by the Legends Who Were There." On television, he appeared on "3rd Rock from the Sun," "Death Valley Days," "ABC Afterschool Specials," "Today," "The Ed Sullivan Show," and "The Mike Douglas Show."
In 1992, he received a star on the Walk of Fame. His earliest theatre experience came as a student at Fullerton Union High School in California. Broadway house marquees were dimmed in his honor on February 22, 2005.
