John Philliber was an American stage and film actor born on July 6, 1873, in Elkhart, Indiana. He died on November 6, 1944, in his hometown of Elkhart at the age of 71.

Philliber spent the majority of his career as a stage actor, with Broadway appearances spanning from 1934 to 1942. His credits included the comedy Mr. Sycamore, the drama Lily of the Valley, Pastoral, and Missouri Legend. Among his documented Broadway roles, he played a hobo in Winterset in 1935, Pieter in High Tor in 1937, Misty in The Star-Wagon that same year, and a husband among the married couples, New Yorkers, and out-of-towners in Two On An Island in 1940.

In the final year of his life, Philliber transitioned to film, appearing in a series of productions in 1943 and 1944. His film credits included A Lady Takes a Chance, in which he played a storekeeper, The Impostor as Mortemart, Double Indemnity as Joe Peters, Ladies of Washington as Mother Henry, Summer Storm as Polycarp, Three Is a Family as Dr. Bartell, and Gentle Annie as Barrow, which served as his final film role. He is best remembered from this period for his portrayal of Pop Benson in René Clair's fantasy comedy It Happened Tomorrow in 1944.
