About
John P. Navin, Jr. (born July 24, 1968) is an American actor from Philadelphia who worked in film, television, and theater during the early 1980s.
Navin appeared in two films alongside Tom Cruise during this period. The first was the 1981 drama Taps, and the second was the 1983 comedy Losin' It. He also took on the role of Cousin Dale in National Lampoon's Vacation. In 1983, he was part of the cast of the short-lived television series Jennifer Slept Here, which starred Ann Jillian.
His television work extended to a notable appearance in the pilot episode of Cheers. In that episode, Navin played the first patron seen on screen at the bar, delivering the series' opening line — a scene in which his character presented Sam Malone with a fake ID while falsely claiming to be a Vietnam veteran. His Losin' It costar Shelley Long was among the leads of that series. Navin also made guest appearances on The Facts of Life, Gimme a Break!, Silver Spoons, and Double Trouble.
On stage, Navin appeared on Broadway in 1982 in Almost an Eagle. Navin has since left acting.
