John Slade Nettleton (5 February 1929 – 12 July 2023) was an English actor born in Sydenham, London. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1951, and built a career spanning stage, television, and Broadway over several decades. He died on 12 July 2023 at the age of 94.
Nettleton appeared on Broadway in 1974 in As You Like It. On the London stage, he performed at the Olivier Theatre in the 1990 production of Alan Bennett's Wind in the Willows, directed by Nicholas Hytner, and at the Lyttelton Theatre at the Royal National Theatre in the 2006 production of Harley Granville-Barker's The Voysey Inheritance, directed by Peter Gill.
His television work was extensive. He is perhaps best known for portraying Sir Arnold Robinson, Cabinet Secretary, in the BBC sitcom Yes Minister from 1980 to 1984, and for reprising a related role as President of the Campaign for Freedom of Information in the sequel series Yes, Prime Minister from 1985 to 1988. He also played Conservative Party MP Sir Stephen Baxter in the sitcom The New Statesman.
Earlier television credits included a Ministry of Defence department chief in The Avengers episode "The See-Through Man" in 1967, a police sergeant in Please Sir! in 1969, Alfred Booker in The Champions episode "Full Circle" in 1969, and Froggett in the office comedy If It Moves File It in 1970. In 1971 he appeared as Francis Bacon in Elizabeth R, as a Detective Superintendent in Doctor at Large, and as George Pattinson in the now-lost Out of the Unknown episode "The Uninvited." In 1972 he played Arthur Bellamy, brother to Viscount Bellamy, in Upstairs, Downstairs. Later credits included The Country Wife in 1977, Brideshead Revisited and The Flame Trees of Thika in 1981, The Citadel and Martin Luther, Heretic and Brass in 1983, East of Ipswich and Major Membury in A Perfect Spy in 1987, Reverend Ernest Matthews in the Doctor Who serial Ghost Light in 1989, Longitude in 2000, Midsomer Murders in 2005, and Kingdom in 2008. During the 1960s and 1970s he also served as a reader of illustrated stories on the children's television programme Blue Peter, frequently narrating stories about historical figures such as Florence Nightingale. He additionally voiced Grandpa in the PC video game The Scruffs.
Nettleton married actress Deirdre Doone in 1954. They had three daughters. Both Nettleton and Doone were members of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
