About
John Miltern (1870 – January 16, 1937) was an American actor who worked in both theater and film across several decades. Born in New Britain, Connecticut, he built a stage career that spanned Broadway productions from 1910 to 1934.
His Broadway credits included Canary Dutch, Roads of Destiny — written by Channing Pollock — The Heart of Wetona, Merry Wives of Gotham, Be Your Age, and Yellow Jack, among other productions. In 1927, Miltern was among a group of actors arrested in connection with theater performances that authorities had deemed indecent.
Miltern's film career began in 1916 with New York, in which he played Oliver King. He went on to appear in a substantial number of silent and early sound productions, including Her Final Reckoning (1918), Let's Get a Divorce (1918), Manslaughter (1922), Three Live Ghosts (1922), and The Ne'er-Do-Well (1923), where he portrayed Stephen Courtlandt. His later film work included Social Register (1934) as Mr. Henry Breene, and several 1936 releases — Ring Around the Moon, Parole!, Sins of Man, Murder on a Bridle Path, and Everybody's Old Man — making that his final year of screen appearances.
Miltern died on January 16, 1937, after being struck by a car, and was killed at the scene of the accident.
