About
John Michael King (May 13, 1926 – August 17, 2008) was an American actor born in New York City whose career on Broadway spanned from 1943 to 1979. The son of actor Dennis King, he built a career centered primarily in musical theatre.
King made his Broadway debut in a revival of The Red Mill in 1945. His career-defining role came with the original production of My Fair Lady, in which he portrayed Freddy Eynsford-Hill and delivered a celebrated rendition of "On the Street Where You Live." That performance earned him the Theatre World Award in 1956.
His Broadway credits extended across several decades and included Of Thee I Sing (1952), Me and Juliet (1953), Ankles Aweigh, Anya (1965), The King and I (1977), and Carmelina (1979). He also appeared in Aren't We All? on Broadway alongside Claudette Colbert, George Rose, and Lynn Redgrave.
Beyond Broadway, King toured in the revised version of Lerner and Lane's On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, a production that starred Van Johnson and Linda Lavin. In that tour he performed under the name Edward Moncrieff, dropping the first name John. He also later appeared with Rex Harrison in connection with that production.
