Born in 1929 in Warsaw, Indiana, John Francis McMartin enlisted in the United States Army following high school. During the 1970s he was a member of the New Phoenix Repertory Company. On Broadway, he originated the role of Oscar in "Sweet Charity." He married Cynthia Baer; they had two children. His long-time partner was Charlotte Moore, actress and artistic director of the Irish Repertory Theatre. Film credits include "Brubaker," "All the President's Men," "No Reservations," "Kinsey," "Blow Out," "Sweet Charity," "The Dish," and "Who's That Girl." On television: "Mary Tyler Moore," "Frasier," "Law & Order," "Cheers," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," "The Golden Girls," and "Murder, She Wrote." Broadway theater marquees were dimmed in his honor on July 13, 2016.
