About
John M. Qualen, born Johan Mandt Kvalen on December 8, 1899, in Vancouver, British Columbia, was a Canadian-American character actor of Norwegian heritage. His father, a Lutheran minister of Norwegian immigrant background, relocated the family frequently, and Qualen was twenty years old when he completed his studies at Elgin High School in Illinois in 1920. He spent four years at the University of Toronto before leaving to join a Toronto-based traveling theatrical troupe, where his wife, Pearle Larson — whom he had married in 1924 and had known since high school — served as costume mistress.
Before establishing himself as a stage actor, Qualen worked the Chautauqua Circuit, where he had initially taken on physical labor driving tent stakes for presentations. His transition to performing came after he showed the circuit's manager an oratory medal he had won in high school, stepping in one night in Ripon, Wisconsin, when the scheduled lecturer failed to appear. He subsequently formed his own company, The Qualen Concert Company, which he and Pearle organized following a tour. The troupe traveled for two years, with stops that included Boston, Chicago, and New Orleans. During this period, Qualen supplemented the company's modest income by selling cookware in New York, using a handcart to move merchandise — work that proved more financially rewarding than his acting at the time.
Qualen reached Broadway in 1929, where his career took a decisive turn when he was cast as Carl Olsen, a Swedish janitor, in Elmer Rice's Street Scene. His Broadway work also included the drama Counsellor-at-Law, with his stage appearances spanning from 1929 to 1932. The role in Street Scene led directly to his film career when he reprised the part in the 1931 screen adaptation of the production.
That film performance was followed by a role in John Ford's Arrowsmith in 1931, which initiated a working relationship with Ford lasting more than thirty-five years. Qualen appeared in supporting roles across numerous Ford productions, among them The Searchers (1956), Two Rode Together (1961), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), and Cheyenne Autumn (1964). In Ford's The Grapes of Wrath (1940), Qualen played Muley, a farmer who describes the destruction of his land by the bank, delivering the role in a Midwestern dialect; the performance reportedly moved Ford to tears. That same year, he appeared as Earl Williams, a confused killer, in Howard Hawks' His Girl Friday. In Michael Curtiz's Casablanca (1942), he portrayed Berger, a Norwegian resistance member who sells jewelry, using a light Scandinavian accent. In William Wellman's The High and the Mighty (1954), he played the fisherman Locota with a thicker Mediterranean accent. Over the course of his career, Qualen appeared in well over one hundred films and continued acting on television into the 1970s, frequently performing roles with Scandinavian and other accents.
Beyond acting, Qualen was a flautist who had begun playing the instrument at age eight. He continued musical study at the University of Toronto and later performed with professional orchestras, including the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He served as treasurer of The Authors Club and as historian of The Masquers, a Hollywood social organization for actors.
Qualen and Pearle remained married for more than sixty years and had three children together, one of whom, Kathy, was also an actress. Qualen died of heart failure on September 12, 1987, in Torrance, California, at the age of eighty-seven.
