About

John Leguizamo, born John Alberto Leguizamo Peláez in Bogotá, Colombia, is an actor, stand-up comedian, film producer, and Broadway performer. His family emigrated to New York City when he was three or four years old, settling in Queens neighborhoods including Jackson Heights. His parents divorced when he was thirteen, after which he lived with his mother. As a student at Murry Bergtraum High School, he wrote comedy material and performed it for classmates, who voted him "Most Talkative." He later enrolled at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts before dropping out to pursue stand-up comedy, subsequently taking theater classes at LIU Post and HB Studio.

Leguizamo's ancestry includes Indigenous Colombian (Muisca), European, and African heritage. His paternal grandfather was a wealthy Colombian landowner, and his great-great-grandfather Higinio Cualla served as Mayor of Bogotá for sixteen years in the late 1800s. His maternal lineage has been traced to the 16th-century Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar and to Jerónimo Betuma, a 17th-century indigenous Colombian of noble birth. His father, Alberto Rudolfo Leguizamo, was once an aspiring film director who studied at Cinecittà in Rome before leaving due to financial constraints.

He began performing stand-up on the New York nightclub circuit in 1984 and made his television debut in 1986 with a small role in Miami Vice. In 1988, he performed at The Public Theater in two productions, including the role of Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream alongside Fisher Stevens. Early film appearances included a role as Private First Class Díaz in Casualties of War (1989), a terrorist in Die Hard 2 (1990), and roles in Hangin' with the Homeboys and Regarding Henry (both 1991). In 1991, he wrote and performed in the Off-Broadway production Mambo Mouth, playing seven characters, which won an Obie Award and an Outer Critics Award. He followed that with Spic-O-Rama in 1993, a one-man show that earned a Drama Desk Award and four Cable ACE Awards. Both productions were later filmed for HBO.

Leguizamo's film career gained significant momentum in 1993 when he portrayed Luigi in Super Mario Bros. and played Benny Blanco in Brian De Palma's Carlito's Way. In 1995, he co-starred as drag queen Chi-Chi Rodriguez in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. That same year, he created, produced, wrote, and starred in the Fox variety series House of Buggin'. Subsequent film credits include Romeo + Juliet (1996), The Pest (1997), Summer of Sam (1999), Moulin Rouge! (2001), Empire (2002), Love in the Time of Cholera (2007), Righteous Kill (2008), The Lincoln Lawyer (2011), The Counselor (2013), John Wick (2014), John Wick 2 (2017), and The Menu (2022). As a voice actor, he played Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age franchise beginning in 2002, narrated the sitcom The Brothers García from 2000 to 2004, and voiced Bruno Madrigal in Encanto (2021).

Leguizamo's Broadway career spans from 1998 to 2017 and includes the productions Freak, Sexaholix, American Buffalo, Ghetto Klown, and Latin History for Morons, for which he also served as book writer. His 1998 Broadway debut in Freak, a semi-autobiographical one-person show directed by Spike Lee, earned him a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo/One-Person Show and a Tony Award nomination. The HBO filming of Freak also brought him the 1999 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program, making him the first Latino to win that award in Emmy history. Sexaholix, which ran on Broadway in 2002, earned him a second Tony nomination. Ghetto Klown added another Broadway credit, and Latin History for Morons, which he both wrote and performed, received a Tony Award nomination in 2018 and earned him a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance in 2011. That same year, 2018, he received a Tony Award Special Award recognizing his body of work.

His television work extends across multiple decades and includes appearances on ER, The Kill Point, Bloodline, and The Mandalorian. He received Primetime Emmy nominations for the Paramount miniseries Waco (2018) and the Netflix limited series When They See Us (2019). In 2023, he hosted the MSNBC series Leguizamo Does America. Across his career, Leguizamo has appeared in more than 100 films, produced more than 20 films and documentaries, and made more than 30 television appearances.
