About
John Karlen, born John Adam Karlewicz on May 28, 1933, in Brooklyn, New York, was an American character actor whose career spanned stage, television, and film across six decades. The son of Helen Agnes (née Balondowicz) and Adam Marion Karlewicz, he was of Polish descent. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before pursuing formal training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts on a scholarship. His earliest professional work appeared on television productions including From These Roots and Kraft Television Theatre.
Karlen's stage career began in 1959 with Sweet Bird of Youth, launching a Broadway presence that continued through 1965. His theatrical credits included All in Good Time, Postmark Zero, The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore, and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, among other productions. In 1963, during this period of stage work, he married acting teacher Betty Karlen; the two divorced in 1998.
In 1967, Karlen joined the ABC daytime serial Dark Shadows, taking on the role of Willie Loomis, whose release of vampire Barnabas Collins from his coffin drove the central narrative of the series. He remained with the production through 1971, appearing in 182 episodes across multiple characters, including Carl Collins, a parallel-universe William H. Loomis, Desmond Collins, and Kendrick Young. During gaps in his Dark Shadows schedule, he appeared on Love Is a Many Splendored Thing as Jock Porter and Hidden Faces as Sharkey Primrose. He reprised Willie Loomis for the 1970 film House of Dark Shadows and played Alex Jenkins in the 1971 film Night of Dark Shadows. Also in 1971, he starred as the male lead in Daughters of Darkness.
Karlen established his most widely recognized television role in 1982, when he was cast as Harvey Lacey Sr., husband of Mary Beth Lacey, played by Tyne Daly, on the CBS crime series Cagney & Lacey. He appeared in 110 episodes over the show's six-year run from 1982 to 1988, receiving Emmy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama in 1985, 1986, and 1987, and winning the award in 1986. He later reprised the character in four television films: Cagney & Lacey: The Return in 1994, Cagney & Lacey: Together Again and Cagney & Lacey: The View Through the Glass Ceiling in 1995, and Cagney & Lacey: True Convictions in 1996. From 2006 to 2019, Karlen returned once more to the role of Willie Loomis for a series of Dark Shadows audio dramas produced by Big Finish Productions.
Karlen died of heart failure in Burbank, California on January 22, 2020, at the age of 86.
