About

John Henry Kurtz (1945 – March 8, 2008) was an American singer-songwriter, actor, and Broadway performer born in Havertown, Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era before pursuing careers in music and acting.

Kurtz released his sole studio album, Reunion, in 1972. The record included a version of "Drift Away," a song composed by Mentor Williams. Although Kurtz's recording is frequently cited as the original, the song had in fact been recorded two months earlier by English singer and actor Mike Berry, whose debut album of the same name also appeared in 1972. "Drift Away" would later reach wide popularity through Dobie Gray's recording of the track.

After his music career did not achieve commercial success, Kurtz shifted his focus to acting. He relocated to New York City in 1981, the same year he appeared on Broadway in Marlowe. He spent much of his life in Vail, Colorado, before eventually settling in Cape May, New Jersey.

Kurtz died of cancer at Cape Regional Medical Center on March 8, 2008.
