John Henry Dilson was an American actor and playwright born on February 18, 1892, in New York, New York. Active in both film and stage, he built a career that spanned several decades and encompassed work across multiple entertainment mediums.
Dilson's Broadway career extended from 1918 to 1939, during which he appeared in a number of productions. His stage credits include the play Excess Baggage, the play Ink, the play The K Guy, as well as the productions I Must Love Someone and Keep Her Smiling.
In addition to his stage work, Dilson appeared in more than 250 films between 1934 and 1944, establishing a prolific presence in American cinema during that period.
In his personal life, Dilson was married to Edith Constance Lee, and the couple had a son, John, Jr. His brother, Clyde Dilson, was also an actor.
After several months of declining health, Dilson died on June 3, 1944, in Camarillo, California, from lobar pneumonia. He was survived by his wife, his son, and his brother. His remains are interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
