About
John Edward Ince was born on August 29, 1878, in New York City, and went on to work as an actor in both stage and film, as well as a film director. He was the elder brother of actors Thomas H. Ince and Ralph Ince.
Ince's Broadway career spanned from 1890 to 1911 and included appearances in Christopher Columbus, or the Discovery of America, The Triumph of an Empress, Ben Hur, The Optimist, and Jim Bludso of the Prairie Belle. In 1910, during his stage years, he was also a member of a stock theatre company at the Alcazar Theatre in San Francisco, California, where he worked alongside actor Howard Hickman.
In the early 1910s, Ince established himself as a leading man in motion pictures, and he additionally directed and scripted a number of his own vehicles. From 1915 through 1928, his focus shifted almost exclusively to directing. With the arrival of sound film, he returned to performing as a character actor in the early talkie era. In 1919, he became a member of The Lambs Club in New York City, following his brother Ralph, who had joined the organization in 1916. John Edward Ince died on April 10, 1947.
