About
John Douglas Thompson is an English-American actor born in 1964 in Bath, England, to Jamaican parents. He was raised in Montreal, Quebec, and later in Rochester, New York. Thompson graduated from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York in 1985, having studied marketing and business. In the early 1990s he worked as a traveling computer salesman in New England before losing that position and choosing to pursue a career in acting. He subsequently enrolled in the Brown University/Trinity Repertory Company program in Providence, Rhode Island.
Before reaching Broadway, Thompson built his stage experience across New England, appearing in lead and supporting roles at institutions including the American Repertory Theater and Shakespeare and Company. He also gave his first performance as Othello at the Trinity Repertory Company during this period. His Broadway debut came in 2005, when he appeared opposite Denzel Washington as Flavius in Julius Caesar. He returned to Broadway in 2007, playing Le Bret in a production of Cyrano de Bergerac that also featured Jennifer Garner and Kevin Kline.
Thompson's breakout moment arrived in 2009 with Off-Broadway productions of Othello and The Emperor Jones, in which he played the respective title roles. His performance in Othello earned him a Lucille Lortel Award and an Obie Award, while The Emperor Jones brought a Drama Desk Award nomination. In 2010 he starred opposite Kate Mulgrew as Antony in a regional production of Antony and Cleopatra in Hartford, Connecticut. Two years later he played Joe Mott in a Chicago production of The Iceman Cometh alongside Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy.
Thompson originated the role of Louis Armstrong and additional characters in the 2014 Off-Broadway one-actor production Satchmo at the Waldorf, later reprising the performance at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. The solo show earned him a Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award. Also in 2014, he took on the title role in the Off-Broadway production of Tamburlaine, Parts I and II, and in 2015 reprised his role as Joe Mott when the Chicago production of The Iceman Cometh transferred to New York. His work across both Tamburlaine productions earned him a second Obie Award, and that same year he received a special Drama Desk Award recognizing his contributions to New York theater through his classical expertise and vocal prowess.
Thompson's Broadway credits include A Time to Kill, King Lear, and Jitney, as well as the 2017 production for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play. In 2018 he appeared on Broadway in Carousel at the Imperial Theatre, playing The Starkeeper alongside Joshua Henry, Jessie Mueller, and Renée Fleming. He also received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Play in 2023. His Broadway appearances span from 2005 to 2019.
On screen, Thompson has appeared in television series including Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, and Conviction, as well as the films Michael Clayton and The Bourne Legacy, in which he played the minor role of Lt. Gen. Paulsen. He appears as Dr. Mitchell in the 2020 HBO Max film Let Them All Talk, directed by Steven Soderbergh, and since 2022 has played Arthur Scott in the HBO series The Gilded Age. In the 2022 film Till, Thompson portrayed Emmett Till's Mississippi uncle Mose Wright. He is also set to appear in the 2025 film Highest 2 Lowest as Detective Earl Bridges. In 2024, Thompson was scheduled to make his Royal Shakespeare Company debut in the title role of Othello. Among his many honors, Thompson is the recipient of two Drama Desk Awards, three Obie Awards, an Outer Critics Circle Award, and a Lucille Lortel Award, in addition to his Tony Award nomination.
