About
John Colenback (October 5, 1935 – May 12, 2015) was an American actor who worked in both television and stage. Born in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of Lloyd Colenback, an executive vice president with Toledo Scale Company, who died when Colenback was twelve. He attended Ottaway Hills Elementary School and Ottawa Hills High School, where he participated in seventeen theatrical productions. At Dartmouth College, he was named best actor during his senior year.
Colenback's professional acting career began in summer stock theatre. An agent who saw him perform at Bucks County Playhouse in Pennsylvania encouraged him to pursue work in New York. His Broadway career spanned from 1961 to 1967 and included two productions: A Man for All Seasons, in which he appeared from 1961 to 1963, and After the Rain in 1967.
Beyond Broadway, Colenback performed in regional productions of The Importance of Being Earnest, The Halloween Bandit, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, As You Like It, and The Chinese Well. He also toured nationally in The Irregular Verb to Love. On television, he became best known for his portrayal of Dan Stewart on the daytime drama As the World Turns.
Colenback died on May 12, 2015, in West Hollywood, California, from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 79 years old.
