About
John Carroll Lynch is an American character actor and film director who made his Broadway debut in 2025, playing Creon in Oedipus, directed by Robert Icke. Born on August 1, 1963, in Boulder, Colorado, Lynch attended Regis Jesuit High School in Denver before studying theater at The Catholic University of America, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1986.
Early in his career, Lynch joined the Guthrie Theater company, where he performed in numerous productions, toured with the ensemble, and remained a member for more than eight seasons. His feature film debut came in Grumpy Old Men in 1993, and he subsequently built a substantial screen presence through a wide range of supporting and character roles. He drew significant attention for his portrayal of Norm Gunderson in the Coen brothers' Fargo in 1996, a role that established him as a recognizable presence in American cinema. His film credits span several decades and include Face/Off (1997), Mercury Rising (1998), Gothika (2003), Zodiac (2007), in which he portrayed Arthur Leigh Allen, Gran Torino (2008), Shutter Island (2010), Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011), Ted 2 (2015), The Invitation (2015), The Founder (2016), in which he played McDonald's co-founder Mac McDonald, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), in which he appeared as activist David Dellinger in Aaron Sorkin's film. Lynch made his directorial debut with the 2017 film Lucky.
His television work has been equally extensive. He appeared for the run of the ABC sitcom The Drew Carey Show from 1997 to 2004, playing Steve Carey, the title character's cross-dressing brother. He has also been a series regular on Close to Home, Carnivàle, and Body of Proof. Lynch appeared across four seasons of American Horror Story — seasons 4, 5, 7, and 9, spanning 2014 to 2019 — with his portrayal of Twisty the Clown becoming a particularly noted performance. In 2018, he took the lead role of Bud Carl in the CBS All Access drama One Dollar, which was cancelled after a single season. Beginning in 2020, he starred in the ABC crime drama Big Sky, created by David E. Kelley, initially as Rick Legarski before returning as the character's twin brother, Wolf Legarski. In 2025, he co-starred in the first season of Ballard alongside Maggie Q.
Lynch has been married to actress Brenda Wehle, herself a former member of the Guthrie Theatre Company, since 1997.
