About

John Burke is an American actor born Robert John Burke on September 12, 1960, in Washington Heights, Manhattan. The son of immigrants from Galway, Ireland, Burke has maintained a strong connection to his Irish heritage throughout his life. He completed his secondary education at Northport High School before training at the Acting Conservatory at the State University of New York at Purchase.

Burke's professional career spans stage, film, and television. His Broadway work includes an appearance in The Ritz in 1983. His screen career began through collaborations with filmmaker Hal Hartley, a fellow Purchase alumnus, starting with The Unbelievable Truth in 1989. Burke continued working with Hartley in Simple Men (1992), which received a Palme d'Or nomination at the Cannes Film Festival, and again in Flirt (1995). In 1991, he appeared alongside Laura Dern in Rambling Rose, for which Dern received an Academy Award nomination. Burke took on the lead role in RoboCop 3 (1993), succeeding Peter Weller in the franchise, and that same year appeared in Richard Stanley's Dust Devil and in Tombstone. In 1996, he played the title role in the film adaptation of Stephen King's Thinner.

Burke's film work continued with roles in the Academy Award-nominated productions Munich, directed by Steven Spielberg, and Good Night, and Good Luck, directed by George Clooney. He portrayed James Mattis, Commanding General of the 1st Marine Division, in the HBO miniseries Generation Kill (2008), and played General Ned Almond, commanding general of the 92nd Division, in Spike Lee's Miracle at St. Anna (2008). Additional film credits include Speak (2004), Hide and Seek (2005), No Such Thing (2001), Safe (2012), and the role of Colorado Springs chief of police in Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman (2018). In 2021, he appeared opposite Freida Pinto in the Netflix thriller Intrusion, and in 2022 he portrayed CIA agent Smitty in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He subsequently appeared alongside Keira Knightley in a remake of The Boston Strangler.

On television, Burke is recognized for a number of recurring roles, including Mickey Gavin on Rescue Me (2004–2011), Bart Bass on Gossip Girl (2007–2012), IAB Captain Ed Tucker on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2002–2020), and Officer Patrick Simmons on Person of Interest (2011–2013). Additional television credits include Kidnapped, Six Degrees, Law & Order, Sex and the City, and The Sopranos. In 2015 and 2017, he made three appearances on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, including a segment parodying his Law & Order role.

Outside of his acting career, Burke holds a second-degree black belt in Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu Okinawan karate. He serves as a volunteer firefighter and captain of Engine 7 of the Ocean Beach Fire Department in Suffolk County, Long Island. His commitment to fire service was shaped by the death of his close friend, FDNY Captain Patrick J. Brown of Ladder 3, on September 11, 2001, as well as the loss of other friends that day. Burke worked at the site during the weeks of recovery efforts that followed. He is also involved with several foundations, including VETHACK, the Leary Firefighter Foundation, the FDNY Foundation, the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation, and the Lt. Joseph DiBernardo Foundation for Fire Fighter Survival.
