About

John Baragrey (April 15, 1918 – August 4, 1975) was an American actor who worked across stage, film, and television, with a Broadway career spanning from 1944 to 1971. He was born in Haleyville, Alabama, the son of John Baragrey Sr. and Norma Baragrey, and harbored ambitions of becoming an actor from childhood. Following his graduation from Haleyville High School, his family discouraged an immediate move to New York, and he spent eight months working at a café in Russellville, Alabama. After his father died in an accident, Baragrey enrolled at Massey Business College in Birmingham and subsequently took a position as a typist and file clerk with Southern Pacific Railroad, holding that job for three years. He earned his degree from the University of Alabama in 1939.

In 1940, Baragrey used his savings to relocate to New York City, where he initially supported himself by taking on typing work at night before finding employment as a waiter at a Schrafft's restaurant, where he earned an average of fifty-five dollars a week including tips. A goiter disqualified him from military service during World War II, but he spent eleven months touring the South Pacific with a USO troupe, performing in the productions Personal Appearance and Petticoat Fever. It was during his USO touring that he met actress Louise Larabee, whom he married in July 1948.

Baragrey built his stage foundation through extensive work in stock theater. In 1946 he joined a stock company led by José Ferrer, and his regional credits also included appearances at the Bucks County Playhouse, Philadelphia's Playhouse in the Park, and the Westport Country Playhouse. His Broadway work encompassed productions including A Flag Is Born, the comedy Right Next to Broadway, One Eye Closed, Pride's Crossing, and Murderous Angels, among others. Throughout his career he performed alongside a number of prominent actresses, among them Rita Hayworth, Jane Wyman, Jane Powell, Anne Bancroft, Judith Anderson, Tallulah Bankhead, Dolores del Río, and Bette Davis.

Television occupied a significant portion of Baragrey's professional life, particularly during the 1950s and early 1960s, when he appeared in numerous dramatic series of the era. Much of that work has since been lost, as many early television recordings were never preserved. Baragrey died on August 4, 1975, at his home in New York City at the age of 57.
