About
Joseph Peter Pantoliano was born on September 12, 1951, in Hoboken, New Jersey, to Italian-American parents Mary (née Centrella) and Dominic "Monk" Pantoliano, whose family ancestry traces to Avellino, Campania. His mother worked as a bookmaker and seamstress, and his father as a hearse driver and factory foreman. The family later relocated to Cliffside Park, New Jersey, where Pantoliano attended Cliffside Park High School. He subsequently trained at the HB Studio under actors Herbert Berghof and John Lehne.
Pantoliano has accumulated more than 150 credits across film, television, and theater. His screen career gained early momentum with the role of Guido in Risky Business (1983), followed by the villainous Francis Fratelli in The Goonies (1985). He appeared in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun (1987) and La Bamba (1987) the same year, and played Eddie Moscone, the bail bondsman, opposite Robert De Niro in Midnight Run (1988). His film work continued with Deputy U.S. Marshal Cosmo Renfro in The Fugitive (1993), a role he reprised in U.S. Marshals, as well as Baby's Day Out (1994) and the Wachowskis' directorial debut Bound (1996), in which he played the double-crossed mafioso Caesar.
Pantoliano reached a new generation of audiences as Cypher in the Wachowskis' The Matrix (1999) and as John "Teddy" Gammell in Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000). He played investigative journalist Ben Urich in the 2003 Daredevil adaptation and starred as Captain Conrad Howard in the Bad Boys franchise across four films from 1995 through 2024. In 2012 he appeared as pawn broker Oswald Oswald in the film adaptation of Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life, written and directed by Tamar Halpern. He later played Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) and portrayed Michael Gorski in the Wachowskis' Netflix series Sense8 from 2015 to 2018. In 2025, Pantoliano appeared in the second-season episode "The Price" of The Last of Us, playing Eugene Lynden, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
His most celebrated television role came as Ralph "Ralphie" Cifaretto on HBO's The Sopranos from 2001 to 2004, for which he won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. During production, Pantoliano wore a wig styled after Christopher Nolan's hairstyle to avoid recognition in New Jersey; the show later incorporated a wig into his character's storyline.
On Broadway, Pantoliano appeared in 2002 in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, replacing Stanley Tucci in the production. In 2013 he was cast as Yogi Berra in the Broadway production of Bronx Bombers but departed during rehearsals due to creative differences.
Pantoliano has been open about his personal struggles with clinical depression, dyslexia, alcoholism, food addiction, sex addiction, and addictions to Vicodin and Percocet. On October 9, 2007, he announced on the National Alliance on Mental Illness blog that he had been living with clinical depression for approximately a decade before receiving a formal diagnosis. He founded the nonprofit organization No Kidding, Me Too!, which works to remove stigma surrounding mental illness by uniting entertainment industry members in public education efforts. He also directed, wrote, and starred in the documentary No Kidding! Me 2!! (2009). Pantoliano has authored two memoirs: Who's Sorry Now: The True Story of a Stand-Up Guy, published by Dutton Books in 2002, and Asylum: Hollywood Tales From My Great Depression: Brain Dis-Ease, Recovery, and Being My Mother's Son, published by Hachette Books in 2013.
Pantoliano was married to Morgan Kester from 1979 until their divorce in 1985. He married former model Nancy Sheppard in 1994, and the couple have four children together. They reside in Wilton, Connecticut. On May 1, 2020, he suffered a concussion and chest trauma after being struck by a car near his home.
