About
Joseph Adam Jonas was born on August 15, 1989, in Casa Grande, Arizona, to Denise, a former sign language teacher and singer, and Paul Kevin Jonas, a songwriter, musician, and former ordained minister at an Assemblies of God church. He has an older brother, Kevin, and two younger brothers, Nick and Frankie. Jonas attended Eastern Christian High School in North Haledon, New Jersey. His performing career began early: in 2002, he appeared in Baz Luhrmann's Broadway production of La Bohème, a credit that preceded his rise to pop stardom by several years.
Jonas went on to become a singer, songwriter, and actor, gaining widespread recognition as a member of the pop rock band the Jonas Brothers alongside Kevin and Nick. The group's origins trace to 2005, when the three brothers recorded their first song, "Please Be Mine," which led Columbia Records president Steve Greenberg to sign them as a group. They toured throughout 2005 with artists including Kelly Clarkson, Jesse McCartney, and the Backstreet Boys, and released their debut single, "Mandy," in December of that year. Their debut studio album, It's About Time, followed on August 8, 2006, through Columbia Records, ultimately selling 67,000 copies in the United States. After Columbia dropped the band, the brothers signed with Hollywood Records and released their self-titled second studio album on August 7, 2007. That record entered the top five of the Billboard 200 and sold over two million copies domestically. Their single "S.O.S." became their first top-twenty hit on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over 1.5 million copies in the United States.
The band's visibility expanded significantly through their association with the Disney Channel. Jonas and his brothers made their acting debut in a 2007 episode of Hannah Montana, performing "We Got the Party" with Miley Cyrus in an episode that drew over ten million viewers. Their third studio album, A Little Bit Longer, was released on August 12, 2008, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales exceeding 525,000 copies and eventually selling over two million copies in the United States. Its lead single, "Burnin' Up," became the group's first top-five hit on the Billboard Hot 100. That same year, Jonas made his film debut alongside his brothers in the Disney Channel film Camp Rock, for which he recorded the duet "This Is Me," a song that reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and sold just over 900,000 copies in the United States. The band also launched the documentary series Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream in May 2008.
In 2009, Jonas and his brothers starred in the 3D theatrical film Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, released on February 27, which became the sixth highest-grossing concert film. Their second Disney Channel series, Jonas, debuted on May 2, 2009, with its second and final season airing under the title Jonas L.A. The band's fourth studio album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, was released on June 16, 2009, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 247,000 copies. Jonas also appeared as a guest judge on a January 2010 episode of the ninth season of American Idol, made a cameo in Vampire Weekend's music video for "Giving Up the Gun" alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, Lil Jon, and RZA, and guest starred in a 2010 episode of Hot in Cleveland. He and his brothers also starred in Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam in 2010.
Following the Jonas Brothers' hiatus and eventual disbandment due to creative differences, Jonas pursued a solo career. He released the lead single "See No More," made in collaboration with Chris Brown, on June 3, 2011, and his debut solo studio album, Fastlife, through Hollywood Records on October 11, 2011. The album sold 18,000 copies in its first week of release. In support of the record, Jonas co-headlined the Joe Jonas and Jay Sean Tour with JoJo as the opening act, running from September 9 to October 6, 2011. He also joined Britney Spears on her European tour beginning October 16, 2011.
In 2015, Jonas formed the funk-pop band DNCE, serving as its lead vocalist. The group's debut single, "Cake by the Ocean," peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Jonas continued his association with Broadway through 2023, with his stage credits including both La Bohème and Jonas Brothers on Broadway, spanning a Broadway career that began in 2002.
