About
Job Stewart (20 January 1934 – 23 October 1991) was a British stage and screen actor born in Cape Town, South Africa. He began his theatrical career in the 1950s, working in Shakespeare and West End drama before establishing a presence on Broadway and later pursuing film and television work.
Stewart's Broadway career spanned from 1956 to 1967. His first New York appearances came at the Winter Garden Theatre, where he performed in a repertory season running from October 1956 through January 1957. During that engagement he played a Page in King Richard II, Peter in Romeo and Juliet, a Witch in Macbeth, and Nestor in Troilus and Cressida. He returned to Broadway in late 1958, this time at the Broadway Theatre on 53rd Street, where he appeared as Osric in Hamlet and as Nym in King Henry V, both productions running through January 1959. In 1962 he performed at City Center Theater in New York, taking on the role of Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet and the Dauphin in Saint Joan. His final Broadway credit was The Astrakhan Coat at the Helen Hayes Theatre in January 1967, in which he played Alain.
Alongside his stage work, Stewart built a substantial screen career in British film and television. His television appearances began with Armchair Theatre: Man in a Moon in 1957 and continued through productions including Tragedy in a Temporary Town (1958), the series Jezebel ex UK (1963), The Old Wives' Tale (1964), and the BBC's Play of the Month presentation of The Moon and Sixpence (1967). His film credits included Wolf Pack (1958), Power and Glory (1963), The Last Shot You Hear (1969), and Galileo (1975). He was a close friend of Judi Dench and appeared alongside her in the television production Love in a Cold Climate (1980), in which he played Boy Dougdale. His final screen appearances were made in Hong Kong in the mid-1980s, including Love in a Fallen City (1984) and Kung Hei Fat Choy (1985). Stewart died in Hong Kong on 23 October 1991 at the age of 57.
