About
Joaquina Kalukango is an American actor and singer originally from Georgia whose Broadway career spans from 2011 to 2022. Of Angolan descent, Kalukango's parents came to the United States as political refugees, a background that has shaped her commitment to portraying roles that reflect the Black experience.
Kalukango trained at the Juilliard School, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Prior to her conservatory studies, she was a 2007 YoungArts alumnus. Her professional stage work encompasses a range of notable Broadway productions, including Into the Woods, The Color Purple, Slave Play, and Paradise Square.
Her portrayal of Kaneisha in Slave Play earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play in 2020. Two years later, Kalukango took on the role of Nelly O'Brien in the Broadway musical Paradise Square, a performance that brought her the 2022 Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical as well as the 2022 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. Earlier in her career, she received a Theatre World Award in 2012.
Beyond the stage, Kalukango has worked in film and television, with credits that include One Night in Miami..., the Netflix limited series When They See Us, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves.
