About
Joanne Elizabeth Nail, born June 3, 1947, in Spokane, Washington, is an American former actress whose work spanned film, stage, and television. She has a fraternal twin brother, Gregory, who became a physician, and another brother, David, who works as a businessman. Nail began performing at the Spokane Civic Theatre during her youth and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. She studied art at the University of Washington for three years before completing a bachelor's degree in education at Eastern Washington University in 1970.
Nail made her Broadway debut in Scratch in 1971, followed by an appearance in Lysistrata in 1972. Her feature film debut came in the exploitation film Switchblade Sisters in 1975, in which she appeared opposite Michael Sarrazin. She went on to star in the Italian-American science fiction horror film The Visitor in 1979, playing the mother of a young daughter with telekinesis alongside Mel Ferrer, Shelley Winters, and John Huston. In 1981, she took a lead role in director Larry Cohen's horror comedy Full Moon High, opposite Adam Arkin.
Her television work included guest appearances across numerous series during the 1970s and 1980s. Among her credits were Marcus Welby, M.D. in 1974, The Rockford Files in 1977, Hawaii Five-O in 1978, Harry O, Young Maverick, and Cagney and Lacey in 1988.
