About
Joan Tompkins (July 9, 1915 – January 29, 2005) was an American actress whose work spanned stage, film, television, and radio. Born in New York City, she was the eldest of two daughters of Merritt E. Tompkins and Florence H. Aitken. Early in her career, she gained experience performing with stock theater companies in Mount Kisco and White Plains, New York.
Tompkins established a presence on Broadway between 1935 and 1940, appearing in four productions during that period. Her stage credits included Fly Away Home, Pride and Prejudice, The Golden Journey, and My Sister Eileen. In addition to her theatrical work, she pursued a career in radio, film, and television throughout her professional life.
On July 25, 1936, Tompkins married actor Stephen Ker Appleby in Briarcliff, New York. That marriage ended in divorce on December 4, 1941. She later married actor Karl Swenson, after which she was also known as Joan Swenson.
